Surface water is water that collects on the Earth's surface, in rivers, streams and lakes for example – regardless of whether it falls to earth as rain or whether it springs from the earth. Through emissions, for instance from the industry, agriculture or other sources, it can be more or less contaminated. Only once it has been treated can it be used as drinking water, or industrially as process water.
