Engaging Climate Action

We are committed to doing our part in the global effort to reduce carbon outputs and take an active role in preserving the natural environment that ensures the quality of our mineral water. Part of this effort has been realized by achieving certified carbon neutrality this year.

Our Mission

Sustainability is part of our DNA and always has been. An environmental and climate-friendly approach corroborates the inherent natural essence of our mineral waters, which depend on an intact and pristine ecosystem.

Keeping our carbon footprint as low as possible is an effort we have been committed to for quite some time; we have continually expanded our goals and worked with our partners in a joint effort. Our future demands ambitious and proactive climate action:

By 2030, we aim to reduce our carbon footprint (Scope 1 and 2) by as much as 59%. As a result, we are supporting the ambitious goal of limiting global warming to a maximum of 1.5 °C, set by international climate agreements.

By reducing our CO2-emissions at our location in Gerolstein and maintaining a continuous dialogue with all our suppliers, we are degreasing our direct and indirect emissions.

Preserving Forests for Climate Stability

Gerolsteiner is proud to mark 2020 as the year that we achieved carbon neutrality along the entire supply chain, including our bottling process, packaging practices, transportation operations, and utilization of recycled bottles. Implemented through certified forest protection projects in Indonesia and Peru in cooperation with our partner ClimatePartner.  With a commitment to act on a global scale, our primary goal is to factor the worldwide effects of climate change into our approach and invest where the ramifications of a rapidly changing climate are most felt.

Gerolsteiner Future Forest Project

A healthy forest produces healthy water. We reinforce the link between robust and flourishing forests and climate action in our local environs by carefully transforming pure spruce forests into more bio-diverse and climate-stable mixed forests, just as nature intended.

On Track to Climate Action

Dedicated climate action requires a detailed understanding of our greenhouse gas emissions. The renowned Heidelberg Institute for Energy and Environmental Research (IFEU) has provided independent validation of our corporate carbon footprint reports since 2017. To maintain the highest standards and uphold our commitment to climate control, we include all emissions along our supply chain to produce an extensive and complete carbon assessment.

The Gerolsteiner Sustainability Task Force has developed an ambitious plan for climate action – a project that has been in development for over a year. After the publication of a comprehensive carbon footprint report, the team consulted with leading experts to create Gerolsteiner-specific climate targets.

The main areas of action were mapped out and specific tactics to reduce our emissions were specified with the goal to meet our climate target by 2030. To obtain this substantial climate action, we focus on our entire supply chain. We actively engage and work collaboratively with all our partners and suppliers, and have set specific annual actions and objectives.

Utilizing all the possibilities to reduce our carbon footprint is a challenging process. Given that Gerolsteiner relies on an extensive bottling process, it is not feasible to achieve zero net emissions. Compensating for our emissions through environmental projects certified to the highest standards supports our global approach towards climate action. Initiating change and taking a pioneering position in our home base was the driving force behind our mission to realize carbon neutrality along the entire supply chain by 2020.
