What makes a good mineral water?

No two mineral waters are the same. What differentiates them is both their mineral content and their mineral composition. Both of which are determined by the geographical origin, or ‘terroir’ of the mineral water.


When shopping, it is wise to compare as the mineral content differs from water to water, sometimes considerably. There are mineral waters with a low mineral content. The label on the bottle will reveal how many and which minerals are present in a mineral water, for example, whether it provides a lot of valuable calcium and magnesium.

The levels and ratio of minerals in water influences its taste: a low-mineral content can result in a sour taste, because the carbonic acid overpowers the presence of other minerals. High-mineral content water tend to have one mineral taste dominate. For example, a lot of sulfate results in a slightly bitter taste. Also, sodium in combination with chloride imparts a salty taste.
